The Vampire Diaries costars as well as former couple joked regarding their 'Best Chemistry' win in the People's Choice Awards 2014 within L. A. on Wednesday, January. 8, by humorously addressing the elephant within the room.
'This is insane. Can you believe this particular almost five years within the making? ' Somerhalder, thirty-five, said while accepting TV award. Dobrev then referenced their own characters and said, 'You are appropriate, really. But you understand what's crazier though, Ian? At the start of the show, Elena really hated Damon. '
'You were starting up with my brother!' argued Somerhalder, who was making reference to Paul Wesley's character, Stefan. 'You killed my grandnephew,' Dobrev fired back again, making reference to Steven R. McQueen's character, Jeremy.
'And then she fell deeply in love with me, ' Somerhalder remembered.
'And then we started dating in the show, ' Dobrev added that.
Somerhalder noted that these people started dating in actual life just before Dobrev reminded the audience they called it quits within May 2013 after 3 years of dating. 'Then we split up in real life,' she said.
'And yet our characters continue to be dating on the display,' Somerhalder said.
'It's the best thing it is not awkward,' the show's leading lady said having a nervous laugh.
Cue the actual awkward facial expressions.
'Well, it is the best thing we've chemistry! ' Dobrev said because Somerhalder gave her a peck in the cheek.
The exes--who got ready for that People's Choice Awards together--are obviously on good terms. (It doesn't hurt they won the coveted place in E! Online's Best TV Couple ever Tournament in November. )
Dobrev far-famed her 25th birthday upon Thursday, Jan. 9, and Somerhalder was among the first to wish the woman's well. 'Happy Birthday @ninadobrev!!! ' he tweeted soon after midnight. 'This world loves you! We all perform. Enjoy that moment, enjoy the day, enjoy that year! '.
