Self-infantalization has continuously been a mainstay regarding Avril Lavigne’s private brand, but as the girl starts creeping towards 30 she’s made a decision to take a page from Gwen Stefani’s book and insert herself within a culture that completely reveres that type of thing: hello, Japan.
In a candy-colored new music video that appears like it was shot in a It’s Sugar store, Lavigne is flanked by the Japanese background dancers who seem to be dressed like pastille Oompa Loompas. These ain’t no hollaback young ladies. Hell, they’re not also Harajuku girls. They’re a cluster of no-style props who frolick inside candy behind Lavigne.
The real disquiet in this particular video comes when Lavigne dances in front of a line of the Japanese back up girls. They step like robots, eyes focused tightly ahead of time. Lavigne looks off among the ether, somehow always going two seconds from whatever her troupe is doing. It’s a little bit of unwitting satire, offering a photograph of an non-self aware person appears like, that would become comically exaggerated in case it were at all comedic.
At the 1: 48 mark we transition right into a sushi house while this editing imparts to us that we are either upon drugs or having a huge sugar rush. As this shots were limited here, we quickly move towards a Mean Girls-esque street-style shot, for which Avril has mysteriously not modified her outfit. Anyone with even minimal exposure to the Tokyo street style battles would know her school girl outfit is upon the right track but not nearly ostentatious enough towards cause a sensation.
Obviously this dub move inspired track was not one of several ones produced by the girl's now-husband, Chad Kroeger associated with Nickelback, although he is equipped with a co-writer credit. No word if it is a double-entendre for some thing, but then Lavigne usually does love to play it direct.
Watch the gloriously ghastly 'Hello Kitty' music video on Lavigne's web site.
